Short Story Submission- Why I Love the Letter G (Part 10)

It’s a “Party in the Park” on Sunday, June 2 hosted by the Elmwood Public Library!

Bring the family or come alone and join in the fun. Help us kick off the Summer Reading Program and enjoy the good weather and neighborhood camaraderie! 

The fun starts at 4 pm and ends at 6 pm at the Bess Streeter Aldrich Park. We’ll have face painting and glitter tattoos sponsored by Cindy Mather and Cindy Hovorka and Your Thairapist Salon.

Find the library stand and you can check-out hula hoops, water guns, bubbles, and other fun outdoor toys and games. At 5 pm, “The String Beans” will take the stage! (Audience participation is not required, but it’s hard to resist.) 

We’ll also have two food trucks that will have meals and treats available for purchase! Note, the Tastee Trailer will be setting up at the park around 11 am on Sunday morning. Feel free to stop by and get your lunch before the rest of the fun starts at 4 o’clock. 

Picnic tables will be available but plan on bringing a lawn chair or picnic blanket just in case. Also, for safety purposes, personal vehicles will not be allowed in the parking lot. Please obey parking bans so that food trucks have room to operate safely. The library wishes to thank the many kind people and organizations that have helped set-up this fun community event.

 Elmwood Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day in Elmwood would not be the same if it were not for the extremely well-done ceremony at the Elmwood Cemetary put on by the American Legion 247. 

Our own Captain Jase Blunt, U.S. Army Reserve, was the keynote speaker and was exceptionally good. Capt Blunt is assigned to the Omaha Fire Department Training Division. Blunt served 3 tours overseas as a Military Police Officer. He was a Detachment Commander exercising command and control over 45 Soldiers. He directed and managed detachment operations and staff to provide Military Police support to Law Enforcement operations. 

Jase explained the importance of D-Day and how D-Day is just one part of an entire operation. No one still knows what the "D" stands for, but the military likes its labels and likes naming things. Being the 75th Anniversary of D-Day we are all reminded of our own personal D-Days that change us forever. A significant date in our lives that is forever remembered. 

It is Veterans who have served during times of war that each have their own D-Day. We owe all our veterans our gratitude as they made the sacrifice from family, put themselves in harm's way, and in some cases, gave their lives for their country. That is what Memorial Day is all about. 

Cub Scout Pack 360 did a flag folding presentation to a reading of the 13 steps of what each fold means. Next week I will post more photos with the complete narration of all the steps. They are significant and many in attendance had never heard this read before.

Nebraska Senator Rob Clements played the Battle Hymn of the Republic on the trumpet. Again part of a great community tradition. 

After the cemetery presentations, people then gathered at the Elmwood Community Center for lunch and desserts.

Summer Detassling Jobs

April 24th, 6:30 pm at the Elmwood-Murdock High school. 

 The E-M youth baseball and softball season is here and we need umpires.

If you are 14 and over and interested go to emsports.org to sign up as an umpire.

Behind the plate umpire needs to be 18 or older except for 8 and under baseball.

Softball umpires are required to be certified except for 8 and under softball.

The Bess Streeter Aldrich House with the assistance of the Novel Approach Book Club would like to invite you to the Aldrich Gardens for a book review.

On Tuesday, June 11, at 7 p.m., Melissa Amateis from Lincoln will review her book Nebraska POW Camps.

This is a FREE event, and refreshments will be served. Please join us!

 Elmwood #LittleFreePantry

The Little Free Pantry is located between Hufstader Chiropractor, the Elmwood Meat Market, and the Village Hall. 

You may not get out as often, but people are still in need of emergency supplies and cupboards are bare in some Elmwood homes. 

Earlier this month received an email from a former Elmwood resident, Ralph Parish. He would love to hear how you liked his short story and if you have any memory of Miss Kunz as a teacher. 

This will be a multi-part story series, so make sure to come back each week.

Miss Kunz taught First Grade through Third Grade for more years than I could then remember. She taught four of the five Parish children.

Why I Love the Letter g - Part 10

Miss Kunz made a small scale grocery store located midway along the south wall of our classroom. Over time, Miss Kunz had collected, intact, empty containers of many common grocery store items.” Clabber Girl Baking Powder”. I always thought, and still do, that anything with a name like that had to be good. (Thank you SNL). There were cracker boxes, cereal boxes, coffee, sugar, flour, soup. The list goes on and on.

The objectives included courtesy on the part of the customer and clerk, accuracy in writing the sales slip, accuracy and correct method of making change. Everyone took their turn as customer and clerk. There was a right way and a wrong way to carry out these tasks and Miss Kunz was not about to have one of her students get it wrong.

All holidays were observed with art projects. Butcher paper and colored chalk were usually the raw materials. At Christmas, the lower window panes were covered with a mixture of Old Dutch Cleanser mixed with enough water to make a smooth white paste. Christmas scenes cut from card stock were templates that allowed the white paste to be on the glass revealing the scene.

When my brother had been in Miss Kunz’s class, two years before me they built a church that was framed with lath and covered with butcher paper. It was large enough to allow seating for the whole class. It featured stained glass windows drawn with gothic arches and colored using chalk. I only saw this once and I don’t think that it was repeated.  I can recall my disappointment when I realized that our class would not be building a church.

We made small gifts for our mothers.  Once we made a “What Not”. We were given a pre-cut piece of plywood that we sanded, stained, and finished with lacquer.  An empty thread spool, split in half and glued to a small mirror, provided a half round hole to hold some fake flowers tied with a little ribbon.
