In preparation for the Elmwood Memorial Day observances volunteers are needed to decorate the gravesites with flags. 

This is a wonderful opportunity to bring your kids and teach them about our local contributions our military veterans have given to our country.

Monday, May 27, 10:00 a.m. at the Elmwood Cemetery.

• 9:30 a.m. march from G.A.R. Hall, everyone welcome
• 10:00 a.m. Memorial Day Services, Elmwood Cemetary
• 11:00-1:00 pm Lunch at the Community Center
• G.A.R. Hall Veterans Museum open after services until 2:00 pm
• Rain location for services - Fire Hall

  The RED CROSS BLOODMOBILE will be in Elmwood on Monday, June 3rd

 1:00 - 6:00 pm 

As always you can walk in and donate.

Appointments are welcome, but not necessary. 

 The Elmwood-Murdock Spirit Squad has been busy this spring.

First, it was their annual Plant Sale at the beginning of May.

If it would just warm up so my plants will grow. I will admit the spinach, lettuce and radishes are loving it though.

Now they are selling Cookie dough...I bought TWO. Find a cheerleader and order today!

Summer Detassling Jobs

The bus picks up in Elmwood! Informational meeting

April 24th, 6:30 pm at the Elmwood-Murdock High school. 

 The E-M youth baseball and softball season is here and we need umpires.

If you are 14 and over and interested go to emsports.org to sign up as an umpire.

Behind the plate umpire needs to be 18 or older except for 8 and under baseball.

Softball umpires are required to be certified except for 8 and under softball.

The Bess Streeter Aldrich House with the assistance of the Novel Approach Book Club would like to invite you to the Aldrich Gardens for a book review.

On Tuesday, June 11, at 7 p.m., Melissa Amateis from Lincoln will review her book Nebraska POW Camps.

This is a FREE event, and refreshments will be served. Please join us!

CASS COUNTY RESOURCE FAIR 
May is Older Americans Month.

The Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging is hosting a Senior Resource Fair on 

Monday, May 20 from 11:30 to 2 p.m.

at the Elmwood Community Center.

Make reservations to eat lunch at the Center by calling 994-2145, or make your reservation while attending the Resource Fair.

Public Library Evaluation

The American Library Association (ALA) is a source of great help to our nation’s libraries. Among other things, their staff provides an auditing tool to help libraries calculate their value (in monetary terms) to their community. Library Director Anne Pope recently crunched the budgetary and usage numbers from 2018 and came up with a surprising result!

“The ALA places different values for number and types of books borrowed, hours of computer use, meeting space utilization, etc. In 2018 the Elmwood Public Library gave $61,500 towards our community. In that same year, our entire operating budget was only $25,000. So when you think about it, this community gets a lot of bang for their buck!”

Anne went on to say that while book lending is the primary function of the Elmwood Public Library, it’s by no means its only occupation. “We have Wifi, public computers, printers, faxing capabilities, media equipment, Interlibrary loan services, e-book, and audiobook capacity. We even have online access to the Small Business Reference Center, Legal Information Center and Encyclopedia resources.

A lot of these resources are online and easily accessible to those who have a computer in their home but don’t have the means to get to town. If you have a library card, I can give you the secret passwords and you’re all set!”

Feel free to stop by the library and take advantage of the many resources available to young and old!

The String Beans are coming back!!

This will be EPIC!!! For those who don't know who the String Beans are...like my brother...they are not the Wiggles.

Here is the info from their website:

 Elmwood #LittleFreePantry

The Little Free Pantry is located between Hufstader Chiropractor, the Elmwood Meat Market, and the Village Hall. 

You may not get out as often, but people are still in need of emergency supplies and cupboards are bare in some Elmwood homes. 

Earlier this month received an email from a former Elmwood resident, Ralph Parish. He would love to hear how you liked his short story and if you have any memory of Miss Kunz as a teacher. 

This will be a multi-part story series, so make sure to come back each week.

Miss Kunz taught First Grade through Third Grade for more years than I could then remember. She taught four of the five Parish children.

Why I Love the Letter g - Part 9

Three months after I started second grade our nation was at war. I can remember being frightened that we might be attacked with poison gas.  That soon wore off and we were introduced to the Weekly Reader. That was a child size newspaper that carried articles suitable for children. One that I remember was a photo of England’s Princess Elisabeth on her back, wearing fatigues and changing the oil in a Jeep. The grown-up version is still with us. I hope that the Brits are appropriately thankful, but I digress.

We were all given the opportunity to write to a pen pal in England. We were given names and addresses and a letter from our British counterpart. I wasn’t very committed to the project. More’s the pity. The only thing that I remember is the first letter. The handwriting was what got me. It was written backhand, very precise, very pleasing to the eye.  It always bothered me that we had to use ”The Palmer Method”. There must have been a “Miss Kunz” at work in that person’s young life.

We were taught telephone etiquette. Two wall type phones were brought to our classroom. One was installed on the north side of the room. The other was installed in the cloakroom at the rear. Each student had to make and receive phone calls using just exactly the proper words for each occasion. When making a call we were to introduce ourselves to the person answering. The person answering also had a correct form to be used when their phone rang.

We all practiced and mastered the drill.

   “Hello, Parish residence, Ralph speaking.”

    “Good morning Mr. …

 On the callers' end, you had to properly identify yourself and then go on accordingly.

It must have been about that time that we had our first dial phone installed at home. We had a five-digit number and all calls went through a telephone exchange down on main street. Private lines were rare and I doubt that there were more than three or four in our entire town. Listening to other people’s conversations was not just common, it was expected.  Needless to say, Miss Kunz didn’t encourage the practice.
