Cass County News Cass County Fair Farmers Market Elmwood Village Updates SUBMIT NEWS
It's County Fair Time!!
We wait for it all year, it's the social event of the county. The Cass County Fair is looked forward to by thousands of people who carry on traditions year after year from entering exhibits in Open class to watching the tractor pulls. Although the fair does not "officially" start until Wednesday the grounds were abuzz starting Sunday with activity.

Starting Sunday afternoon people started entering projects in the Open class division, animals started arriving and excitement was definitely in the air.

All this happens with volunteers. A LOT of volunteers. Thank you to everyone. Next week photos of the fair.
If you have photos please feel free to share them by emailing editor@elmwoodnebraska.com

Elmwood’s Main Street Revitalization Project
The Elmwood Community Development Agency kicked off the Elmwood Main Street Revitalization project with the help of three agencies; Nebraska Main Street Network, Inc., Cass County Nebraska Economic Development Council, and OPPD - Economic Development. The representatives from those groups, Elizabeth Chase, Jennifer Serkiz, and Brook Aken, made a presentation to the Main Street Revitalization Committee in June.
The presentation covered statistics about Elmwood and described the process for revitalizing a main street. The ladies covered the steps that it takes to undertake a project like this.

The first step is to gather information from the residents of Elmwood. We have divided the project into three categories. The first is the simple projects and activities. What are the things that we can do right now to improve the look of main street and to generate a positive energy? The second category is the intermediate projects and activities.
These involve increasing level of difficulty and involvement of volunteers, professionals, and planners. The third category is the most challenging. This is the difficult projects and activities. It is more complex and intensive. This is where the rubber hits the road and the big projects get done. Whether it is redevelopment of buildings or construction of new, this is where that happens.

Now that we have identified the steps we are looking for ideas that go under each category. The committee has already identified some ideas but we would like to hear from those who have not been able to attend the meetings.
We recognize that there is a big interest in this project but not everyone has time to attend the meetings. We would still like to hear your input so we are reaching out to you and hope that you can respond with your input.
Please read the following pages that I have commandeered from the presentation so you will understand the information we are looking to gather from you. There are some pictures from other communities to show what they have done in projects similar to this.
I have included a list at the end that the committee has already identified so please don’t repeat those ideas. We want to make sure we have gathered all the ideas possible so please respond if you have input.
On Tuesday, August 21st we will be having a prioritizing meeting where we decide which ideas are more important and which we think are achievable.
Please send your responses by Thursday, August 16th.

It's just around the corner. E-M Public Schools are back in session August 16.
While the school libraries are a wonderful source for books and reference materials, don't forget your public library has many Pulitzer Prize winners, literary classics, and new titles coming in all of the time.
We also utilize an interlibrary loan program to borrow books from other locations throughout the state!
Our librarians are familiar with the AR program that the school utilizes to encourage young readers. We can help make decisions by looking-up almost any book title to see its point value for your child!
Some of our latest additions are:
The Most Magnificent Thing (0.5 pts)
If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Don't! (0.5 pts)

Elmwood #LittleFreePantry
Elmwood has a "Little Free Pantry" in town. Bet you didn't know about it? Or maybe you did and didn't know what it was all about. It's a little cabinet located between Hufstader Chiropractor, the Elmwood Meat Market, and the Village Hall.

The items in it are FREE for those who are needy, don't have food in their cabinets and need just a little something to get them by till the next day. Various people donate items to put in the cupboard, and they notice that several items do disappear.
Spread the news. Stop by and put something in when you come back from grocery shopping. If you know a family or anyone struggling, let them know this resource is available in town.
What can you donate, what may you find?
Generally, canned vegetables and proteins, personal care items, and paper goods. Kid-friendly non-perishables, crayons, and inexpensive party favor items are great for Summer...school supplies for August!

School's out for the summer, but if you're going to purchase photos or photo gifts, why not use the link below and help support the Elmwood-Murdock School with every purchase! Senior parents, don't forget about this link when you start ordering senior photos.

Work on N-63 Alvo North Realignment
March 15, 2018 (Lincoln, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work is scheduled to continue the week of March 19 on N-63, between Alvo and I-80, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Knife River, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa has the $11,758,926 contract. Work will include realignment of N‑63, culverts and box culverts, and wetland mitigation. This will be the second of two phases of work.
