CASS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ADOPT 12 MONTH DATA CENTER MORATORIUM

Plattsmouth , NE— The Cass County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt a 12 month moratorium on permitting for data centers within the county. Data center regulations recommended by the Planning Commission were tabled until September 22nd while commissioners work to address concerns.

Dozens of residents filled the commissioners room and an overflow room for the 8:00am meeting. Residents were lined up at the courthouse doors as early as 7:00am. The 12-month moratorium is a step in the right direction. However, this is not the end of the conversation.

Elected officials and developers need to engage openly and transparently with the public to determine the best path forward. Cass County Data Center Watch is calling on Tenaska and other potential developers to hold town hall meetings in the coming months and openly answer residents’ questions.

Today’s public hearing and moratorium vote comes after hundreds of residents packed the July 13th Planning Commission meeting in Weeping Water. Every speaker during the meeting’s public comment section spoke in favor of a moratorium.

In March 2026, Flatwater Free Press reported that Tenaska and Google were partnering to build a 2,000-acre natural gas power plant and data center in Southeast Nebraska. Earlier this summer Gage and Otoe Counties adopted moratoriums on data center permitting. As of July 18th, Tenaska has optioned 1,664 total acres in Cass County along Highway 75 south of Murray and Beaver Lake.
