Are we getting back to normal?
Our kids now have options of basketball camp, dance class, shopping at Bits and Pieces, swimming at the Weeping Water pool, and even though the Cass County Fair is canceled the 4-H portion is still going to be held in a modified format.
This newsletter is PACKED with updates! It's the longest one I have done in a while and I am happy to do it again. People are getting out again, visiting, traveling, and smiling.
Basketball Camp
Last Day for pre-registration, we are getting back to semi-normal with our activities finally coming back.

Remember the HGTV Competition?
Earlier this year we submitted a video for a Main Street makeover. Due to Covid-19, the announcements for the finalists have been delayed. During the process, I met another contestant from a small town 80 miles west of Chicago.
Jeff and his FFA class put together a video and we helped each other out with the uploading complications.
I got a surprise Facebook message on Sunday morning that him and his family were driving back from a vacation and would be coming through Elmwood (checking out the HGTV competition, no not really)
He said Elmwood looks like a nice place to live. He drove by the Bess Streeter Aldrich House and learned they were doing the Fairy Garden workshop, then stopped in at the gas station and learned a little more about town.
I went over and to say hello and learned they had vacationed in Montana, Wyoming and after Elmwood, they were going to Nebraska City to Arbor Day Lodge. They love to travel and each one has a goal of visiting all 50 states. Only two of them have not met that goal. One of the sons only has one state left. What an achievement.
You neer know how or where you will meet people, or where you will have an opportunity to make an impression for your town.
Bess Streeter Aldrich House
Robbers Cave Presentation
Over 25 people attended the presentation about Robbers Cave from author Joel Green. I don't know about anyone else, but I learned a lot. I had no idea there was a 5,000 sq foot natural and man-made cave under the city of Lincoln.
- Some interesting facts about Robbers Cave:
- Jesse James may have used it, it's possible, but probably not probably.
- Several UNL fraternities and sororities had parties in the cave.
- The Iowa-Nebraska Cooties Club had a meeting in the cave (look up the Cootie Club it's a thing)
- In the 60's it was used as a daycare, yup, kids went down, lights were flickered when they were supposed come up
- Boys Scouts had meetings in the cave
- The owners owned two coyotes, mascots of the local fire department
Fairy Garden Workshop
The Fairy Garden workshop was very popular again this year. Families brought their kids, Grandmothers brought their grandkids and adults came to just create a tiny world of their own to enjoy. Thanks to Cindy Backemyer for providing the succulents, decorations, and ideas.
Proceeds went to support the Bess Streeter Aldrich House
Quilt Show
Don't miss the summer quilt show that runs through the end of August.
Elmwood Farmers Market
We have a regular produce supplier. Joe and Julie Anderson will be at the Farmers Market on July 4th with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
Gretchen's Goodies will also be back with cinnamon rolls and Monster cookies, which sold out in an hour last week.
If you haven't put in your garden yet Karla Snoozy will be back with tomato plants, herbs, and her wonderful canned goods.
We can always use more vendors. More vendors attract more people. More people mean more vendors, more vendors mean more variety!!
More variety means you can do more of your shopping local instead of the "box" stores.
Join our Facebook group and stay up to date on who will be showcasing their produce, baked goods, and other items. Ask if anyone is bringing eggs, honey, cinnamon rolls.
4th of July Fireworks
The Fireworks are going to be a go for this year's 4th of July celebration!!!
Please come and enjoy the show at dusk at the Murdock ballfield.
There will be a donation box going around at the show, or you can donate at Corn Growers State Bank to the Murdock Fireworks account.

Concealed Handgun Permit Course
July 19
9:25 - 4:30 pm
Elmwood Community Center
Venger Tactical is dedicated to training the public and provide the best experience possible. We are committed to promoting public safety and now offer our Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) classes for Nebraska!
This is the Nebraska class, formally known as the CCW, that you need to meet Nebraska's requirements for a CHP. You won't only meet the requirements, you will exceed them. Nebraska's permit has reciprocity with 34 states. This class isn't like most others.
We actually want you to be comfortable with a firearm in your hand. We won't just do the test, we will help build your fundamentals and run some extra drills for you to feel comfortable with carrying. This Class will be held on July 19th, 2020 in Elmwood, NE, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.
A welcome letter will be emailed out a week before with the class location.
Bring: Pen/Pencil, handgun w/2 mags, 120-150 rounds, Eye/Ear Protection (I have some if needed), Dominant side OWB holster (you will draw several times during the course), Driver's license (it's needed to complete your certificate).
Elmwood Water Main Break
About 3:30 pm Monday, June 22nd There was a major water main break that could have caused a major interference in the town's water supply. Due to the quick action by Elmwood Board members and By 8:52 that evening water supply was restored.
We could continue to shower, do laundry, water the garden, and mop the floor,...if that is what you wanted to do.
The Village Board and village, personnel stepped up and handled the water emergency quickly and effectively. Shortly after being notified of the problem, the message went out on Facebook to start reaching people and they were also canvassing the town going door to door to notify residents.
People from the state, at the governor's request, were reaching out to see if Elmwood needed drinking water brought in. If you had to buy water the village will reimburse you. You can do laundry, wash the dishes, water your garden, just don't drink it.
I think the situation was handled great! This Village Board has never had to deal with anything like this before but they figured it out. Their first priority was for the safety of the citizens. We may have been a little inconvenienced but that is par for the course for 2020. It was another wake-up call for all of us to keep some vital supplies on hand.
A big thank you to Miki Bruns, David Ernst, Rebecca Bowman Kicak, Pat Wray, Angela Lancaster, Curtis Klabenes, Ed Blunt, Moriah Lenz, Kristen Janssen, Clint Bornemeier, Tanner Bornemeier, Cody Price, Tyler Rosenow, Tara Ruth, and everyone else who shared the posts called your neighbors and helped with this emergency! That is what community is all about. Job well done!
Free water supplied by the town and if you bought drinking water you can submit your receipts to the Village Clerk for reimbursement.
By Saturday at noon, the water was safe to drink again. This could have been much worse. We could of been totally out of water for days with nothing to flush with, but this did NOT happen.
Thank you to everyone involved!
