Coronavirus and Our Community

The world and our daily lives have changed drastically since the last newsletter last week. If you were like me it was hard to keep up with the daily changes. School is canceled through the 23rd, events canceled and a lot of modifications to our daily life. Not to mention the massive toilet paper riots.

But not all is depressing. There is hope, and our community comes together to support one another.

Take It Or Leave It Pantry

You may have forgotten about the Elmwood Take-it-or-Leave food pantry, but it is even more important than ever. Many in our community are going to have children at home who have depended on school lunches and the BackPack program for weekend supplemental nutrition.

The free pantry is here to serve our community. It is for neighbors helping neighbors.

takeitorleaveitpantryElmwood 2020b

Those who wish to contribute may do so at their discretion when convenient. Take what you need or leave what you can. If the box if full please bring your items back later. So what should you contribute? During this coronavirus situation, there will be an increased need for healthy snack items for kids. Obviously items like toilet paper, sanitizer may be needed by many.

Please avoid harsh strong-smelling chemicals that may transfer to food items.

Here are some ideas that may be useful:

  • Pasta
  • Canned pasta
  • Canned soup
  • Granola bars
  • Fruit snacks
  • Dry pasta
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Dry soup mixes
  • Canned meat (chicken, tuna etc)
  • Boxed prepared meal kits

The 24-hour pantry is located on the west side of the Village office on west C Street, behind Bits N Pieces and at the entrance of the Elmwood Meat Plant.

Due to the health alerts and the changes in our day-to-day living right now and the restrictions the city of Omaha has placed on how many people can gather at one time we have changed the April 1 JOB FAIR to be a drive-thru job fair instead of a face-to-face hiring event.

We will be having a DRIVE-THRU job fair from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Comfort Inn & Suites at 7007 Grover Street in Omaha.
Simply drive-thru the designated area in the parking lot at the Comfort Inn & Suites at 70th & Grover and you will receive a bag full of job opportunities.

The employers will provide their flyers, applications, brochures, etc. and all the information will be in the bags. You can then go home and go through all of the material and apply with the instructions each employer has provided.

Employers are still hiring and they need you now even more than ever.

Remember you can still find great jobs:
www.jobfairsNebraska.com JOBS board. Click on the JOBS tab and see all the employers who have jobs posted on the site. Click on the company you are interested in and you will be directed right to their open job postings. Now, you can even click on their logo and be directed right to that company's website. Fast, easy and great jobs!
EBLAST. We send out monthly emails to every registered job seeker about upcoming job fairs in the community. And from time to time employers will provide us information to send out by email to all of the registered job seekers about their open positions. Go to www.jobfairsNebraska.com and click on job seeker information and submit your email so you can be added to our database now.

State of Nebraska

Office of State Treasurer John Murante

For Immediate Release

January 21, 2020

NEST529 “Why I Want to Go to College” Writing Sweepstakes Now Open

(Lincoln) For the 18th year, Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante and the Omaha Storm Chasers will be sponsoring the “Why I Want to Go to College” writing sweepstakes, with entries due Friday, March 27, 2020.

Prizes will be awarded to 12 winners who will receive contributions to the Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST) college savings accounts – including $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Three winners will be chosen from each of Nebraska’s three Congressional districts, and three winners will be chosen from outside Nebraska.

Each Nebraska winner will receive four tickets to the Sunday, May 3rd Storm Chasers game at Werner Park in Papillion at 2:05 p.m. where they will be recognized during the game.

“This event is such a highlight of just how inspiring the NEST529 program can be. It is a wonderful way to challenge students to focus on their goals, improve their writing skills, and learn the importance of saving for their education. I’m looking forward to meeting the winners and their families at Werner Park,” said State Treasurer John Murante.

Families can save for college for their children and grandchildren through NEST529, the state-sponsored 529 college savings program that allows for tax-free investments and tax-free qualified withdrawals. Nebraska account owners can qualify for up to $10,000 a year in state income tax deductions.

Students are asked to reflect on the value of education and what they hope to achieve through higher education. Entries are limited to 750 words and should be sent to Andrea Bedore, Omaha Storm Chasers, 12356 Ballpark Way, Papillion, NE 68046.

Information about the writing sweepstakes is available on the Treasurer’s website at www.treasurer.nebraska.gov/csp/.
