HGTV is Doing Small Town Make Overs
The submission video is complete. Thank you to the many people who contributed to this project.
I lost count of how many people are in the video in photos of various events during the last three years. But it's close to two hundred. I was able to video interview, several people and although they were hesitant about being recorded and feeling awkward the result was perfect.
As I was going over the photos from the past three years it reminded me of why I live in Elmwood. The people here are phenomenal. The community pride is outstanding, and it is evident we have one area of town that is a sore spot, a source of embarrassment.
But as evidenced by over a hundred people who came together for the park build, we care, we get involved, and we CAN get things done.
I will make the video available for public viewing after the submission deadline is passed.
Yes, HGTV is looking for small towns to need a Main Street makeover. This is us, people!
According to the criteria the town must the following:
A Population of fewer than 40,000 residents
Contain building with outstanding architecture that would benefit from revitalization.
The location should include a Main Street are that is in DESPERATE need of a makeover.
We CAN do this!
I met with the Village Board last month and they approved moving forward. The deadline is February 7th, this Friday.

The ideal candidate would have a willingness to learn, have great customer service skills, and be highly organized.
The job duties include, but are not limited to:
Utility billing
Administrative duties
Attending bi-monthly board meetings.
29 hours a week

Short Story Contest
Generate a fictional short story that is written in the wholesome spirit displayed by Bess Streeter Aldrich in her works while incorporating a theme that focuses on Nebraska’s family life, economy, history, cultural diversity, and/or geography (past, present, and/or future). Writers are encouraged to focus on historical and/or realistic topics. This year the Aldrich Foundation is paying tribute to Mrs. Aldrich’s book Spring Came on Forever and it would be an excellent resource.

Kate Zakaras is in the second semester of her first year at Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Ne. She was chosen as one of the new Resident Assistants for Path Hall. RA's are chosen based on college involvement, GPA, and work experience.
Most often they are second-year students. The SA's are usually freshman that work up to RA position. The RA's receive a free dorm stay that semester in exchange for their work. Kate is majoring in agribusiness.
Alumni Recognition - Fall 2019 Honors
Students who qualified for the Chancellor's List earned a grade point average of 4.0 for courses during the Fall 2019 semester, provided 12 or more quality hours were completed.

NEST529 “Why I Want to Go to College” Writing Sweepstakes Now Open
(Lincoln) For the 18th year, Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante and the Omaha Storm Chasers will be sponsoring the “Why I Want to Go to College” writing sweepstakes, with entries due Friday, March 27, 2020.
Prizes will be awarded to 12 winners who will receive contributions to the Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST) college savings accounts – including $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Three winners will be chosen from each of Nebraska’s three Congressional districts, and three winners will be chosen from outside Nebraska.
Each Nebraska winner will receive four tickets to the Sunday, May 3rd Storm Chasers game at Werner Park in Papillion at 2:05 p.m. where they will be recognized during the game.
“This event is such a highlight of just how inspiring the NEST529 program can be. It is a wonderful way to challenge students to focus on their goals, improve their writing skills, and learn the importance of saving for their education. I’m looking forward to meeting the winners and their families at Werner Park,” said State Treasurer John Murante.
Families can save for college for their children and grandchildren through NEST529, the state-sponsored 529 college savings program that allows for tax-free investments and tax-free qualified withdrawals. Nebraska account owners can qualify for up to $10,000 a year in state income tax deductions.
Students are asked to reflect on the value of education and what they hope to achieve through higher education. Entries are limited to 750 words and should be sent to Andrea Bedore, Omaha Storm Chasers, 12356 Ballpark Way, Papillion, NE 68046.
