Nebraska State Tree - Cottonwood

It may seem hard to believe that Nebraska was once a treeless plain. The lack of trees and a pioneer from Detroit moving to the Nebraska territory in 1854, named J. Sterling Morton, led to the founding of Arbor Day.

Morton was a journalist and soon became editor of Nebraska's first newspaper. Given that forum, he spread agricultural information and his enthusiasm for trees to an equally enthusiastic audience. His fellow pioneers missed their trees. But, more importantly, trees were needed as windbreaks to keep soil in place, for fuel and building materials, and for shade from the hot sun.

On January 4, 1872, Morton first proposed a tree-planting holiday to be called “Arbor Day” at a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture. The date was set for April 10, 1872. Prizes were offered to counties and individuals for planting properly the largest number of trees on that day. It was estimated that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. Arbor Day was officially proclaimed by the state's Gov. Robert W. Furnas on March 12, 1874, and the day itself was observed April 10, 1874. In 1885, Arbor Day was named a legal holiday in Nebraska and April 22, Morton's birthday, was selected as the date for its permanent observance. Other states soon followed suit and declared an Arbor Day observance.

Today the most common date for the state observance is the last Friday in April, and several U.S. presidents have proclaimed a national Arbor Day on that date. But a number of states Arbor Days are at other times to coincide with the best tree planting weather, from January and February in the south to May in the far north. Arbor Day has spread beyond the United States and is observed in many countries of the world.

Arbor Day proved successful in the eastern half of the state, but the Sand Hills and the panhandle of Nebraska were not thought suitable enough for farming and therefore lacked population. It would take more than Arbor Day to lure people to this desolate area of Nebraska. Indeed, April 28th is the anniversary of exactly what it took for people to homestead this vast area….

Moses Pierce Kinkaid, attorney, judge, and congressman, came to O'Neill, Nebraska in 1881 to practice law. Kinkaid was born in West Virginia in l850 and received his law degree at the University of Michigan. He became a member of the Nebraska State Senate in 1883 and served as chairman of the judicial committee. He was appointed judge of the ten-county l2th District in northwest Nebraska in 1887 by Governor John Thayer and served until 1896.
Kinkaid served ten consecutive terms in the United States Congress from 1903 to 1922. In April of 1904 he proposed the Kinkaid Homestead Act which allowed settlers in a thirty-seven county areas in northern and western Nebraska to homestead up to 640 acres in western Nebraska. The Kinkaid Act was intended to stimulate settlement in Nebraska's Sand Hills and panhandle, where farming was impossible on the 160 acres allowed by the original Homestead Act. The Kinkaid Act, like the Homestead Act, required the homesteader to live on the land for five years and make $800 worth of improvements. Although even the Kinkaid Act failed to provide enough land for farming in the Sand Hills, it did help bring settlers into western Nebraska.

Stay dry and have a great week!
